General information
Official
website
The RVI and Newcastle General Hospital are two of Newcastle's
main hospitals, and are part of the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, along with the
Freeman Hospital. The RVI is in the centre of the city adjacent to the university , while the General is situated in Newcastle's
west end.
The RVI has an NHS Department, which is administratively combined
with that at the Newcastle General, and a University
Department. The RVI is a major centre for Chronic Pain Management, Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery and General Surgery, as well
as Oncology and Medicine. It is also closely linked with the Dental Hospital. Acute
service development in the future is likely to see an expansion of services within the
hospital, with Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma moving from Newcastle General
Hospital ( NGH ). However, we are still in a state of flux, with services being moved
between sites, due to planned PFI building developments, including a new A+E Department,
which is situated at the NGH at present. The NGH acts as the main trauma centre for the
region, and also has specialist paediatric services including retrieval.
Anaesthesia is part of the Peri-Operative and Critical Care
Directorate, the Director being Dr Hughes.
Departmental Education
The RVI and NGH have staff in all grades of training, gaining both
general and specialised training. There are teaching sessions on both sites, with
the primary course and new starters course at the RVI and Thursdat afternoon registrar
teaching at the NGH. There are joint departmental meetings, regular mortality and
morbidity meetings and audit meetings. Trainees are encouraged to attend appropriate
regional FRCA courses. The RVI also hosts the NSA Anaesthetic Forum, which allows trainees
and consultants to present to their colleagues.
ICU Training is
also provided at the RVI for regional trainees in ITU.
