  • A new collaboration is set up with Dr Elizabeth Gibson (Nottingham University) to study compounds for dye sensitized solar cells applications.
  • Congratulations to second-year PhD student Effat Bahaidarah who won the poster prize at the RSC Younger Members Symposium held at the University of Nottingham in June 2012. Effat's work is concerned with unravelling the pathways for electronic energy transfer in multi-component molecular arrays with the intention of building an artificial leaf.
  • Professor Anthony Harriman has been awarded the 2012 High Force Research Student Engagement Prize, voted for by all undergraduate students in the School of Chemistry.
  • Patrycja Stachelek, a Stage 3 undergraduate in chemistry, has been awarded a prestigious Summer Placement to work in the MPL. She will study the photophysics of a novel series of truxcene molecular platforms.
  • Professor Anthony Harriman gave a talk at the Royal Society in London as part of a two-day conference on Photoactivatable Metal Complexes.
  • Dior Bittner, a third-year undergraduate, will work in the MPL over the summer as a Vactional Scholar. He will work on aspects of quantum chemical calculations as applied to metal phosphines and he will liase closely with Dr Simon Doherty.
  • Professor Anthony Harriman has been appointed to the Prizes and Awards Committee of the Faraday Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
  • Professor Rashid M. Altmaimi will visit the MPL for a stay of about two months. Prof Altmaimi is the Assistant Director for Academic Affairs at the Petrochemicals Research Institute in King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He will work with Professor Andy Benniston on the design and synthesis of artificial light harvesting media.
