Research suggests upper limit metal ion levels for metal hip resurfacings

Researchers in Belgium have published an award winning study suggesting that the current recommended upper limits for chromium and cobalt ions levels are too high. They identified safe upper limits of 4.6µg/L for chromium and 4.0 µg/L for cobalt for unilateral hip resurfacing arthroplasties and 7.4 µg/L for chromium and 5.0 µg/L for cobalt for bilateral hip resurfacings.

The study examined 453 unilateral and 139 hip resurfacing patients for a minimum follow up of 4.3 years. Patients were divided into two further groups optimum (good function hips, strict criteria) and non-optimum.
