According to the BBC, doctors are advising that hip resurfacings should no longer be performed due to unacceptably high failure rates. Using data from the National Joint Registry researchers examined their performance and found that they fail quicker than total hip replacements. Failure rates were up to five times higher in women than men, with larger boned men performing as well with hip resurfacings as total hip replacements. As a result the researchers warn they should never be used in women and that only a quarter of men have bones large enough to justify the procedure. Full article here.
