New Scientist Live (plus exclusive discount code)

Andy will be speaking at New Scientist Live 2017 discussing "Neural interfaces: from science fiction to clinical reality".

Moving things with our mind is longer an impossibility.

The idea of linking our brains directly to electronic devices has long been a popular theme in science fiction, but neural interfaces are increasingly finding use in clinical practice to restore brain functions lost after neurological injury or disease.

Implants that send electrical signals into the nervous system can be used to restore lost sensation while other devices detect brain activity to provide communication and control of artificial limbs to people who have been paralysed.

In future, new technologies will allow bidirectional communication between our brains and electronics, acting as prostheses to replace or augment injured neural circuits. In this talk Andrew Jackson will discuss some of the engineering challenges and progress being made in interfacing with the brain. In addition, I will show how neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to rewire itself – can be harnessed by these technologies and speculate about the future opportunities enabled by the merging of neural and electronic circuitry.
