Used in conjunction with a Geographical Information System (GIS) such as ArcView, TopManage enables the user to assess what the effect would be of adding to, or removing from, the land topographic features. Starting from a digital terrain map of a particular field or area of farmed land, usually derived from Geographical Positioning System (GPS) measurement, maps can be input to the GIS, topographic features added, and augmented terrain maps analysed using TopManage.
sinkfind is used to identify sinks associated with a particular topography and atb calculates the topographic index, ln(a/tanb) where a is the upslope area, per unit contour length, contributing flow to a pixel; tanb is the local slope angle acting on a cell. The topographic index, ln(a/tanb), represents a theoretical estimation of the accumulation of flow at a point (see Quinn, Beven and Lamb, 1995). The distribution of the index is used as a basis for the prediction of source areas, saturation excess overland flow and subsurface flows.
