Demonstration Sites
A range of proactive interventions such as small scale renewable energy
generation, temporary storage of water and phosphorus stripping are currently
being tested in the field on working farms to demonstrate the effectiveness of the
proactive ... approach. The principle sites at present are
Nafferton Farm near Newcastle upon Tyne and
Bollington Hall Farm near Stansted.
Nafferton Farm
Nafferton Farm is a 294 ha farm situated in the Tyne Valley to the West of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The farming system is based on dairying, beef production, arable crops and
small scale vegetable production. Run by the
School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development
at Newcastle University, the farm is operated as a commercial enterprise
as a land-based research facility, especially in the area of Organic production and
to provide demonstration facilities for teaching purposes
(see Click here
for further details).
The original goal at Nafferton Farm was to create an Integrated Runoff Management
Plan (IRMP) for a demonstration site where a series of proactive measures would be
taken to control runoff flow paths and the physical and chemical properties of the
water before the flow enters the Whittle Burn – thus reducing flood peaks and diffuse
pollution levels. More ....
Bollington Farm
Bollington Hall Farm is a large arable farm just outside Ugley near Stansted in
the South East of England. Chosen as the site for a monitoring and modelling exercise
in the SEAL project there is rich data
on the terrain and hydrology of the site which provides useful data for the proposed
proactive interventions.
