DISPLAYING THE MINING INSTITUTE ARTEFACT COLLECTION
External Partner: North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers (NEIMME)

http://www.mininginstitute.org.uk/aboutus/index.html

The Mining Institute was established 150 years ago to disseminate information on mining and its history.  The institute has a small collection of lamps and other artefacts/documents which they would like to put on public display.

These objects merit research in their own right. For example, a groundbreaking demonstration of the miners’ safety lamp, invented by George Stephenson, took place at the Newcastle Literary and Philosophical Society (next door to the Institute) in 1815. The project also offers scope to design an innovative and engaging display, in which these artefacts could be used to explore contemporary themes such as the future of coal, renewable energies, and the culture of mining communities.  The collection could also act as inspiration for a contemporary collecting or oral history project, which could also be displayed at the Mining Institute.

This topic would be highly suitable for ICCHS project work, or (as an oral history project) for students in Archaeology and History.
