Introduction

Welcome to Heritage City.
This is your city - here's how you can research it!

This website provides Newcastle University students with information about research opportunities within the historic city of Newcastle.  Our University is located within a city continuously occupied since the Roman period, and renowned for its well-preserved Roman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian/Industrial features. Across the city, heritage professionals (including archaeologists, archivists, historians, architects, planners and museum staff) conserve and care for the city’s heritage, and present it to the public. The research ideas presented on this website were all suggested by external partners working in the heritage sector, and students taking up Heritage City projects will work closely with members of staff from these organisations, which include Newcastle City Council, English Heritage and Tyne & Wear Museums and Archives. The Heritage City Project offers students unique opportunities to draw on expertise and resources provided by these external partners, and to develop contacts with heritage experts beyond the University.

The buttons on the left will guide you to possible topics for dissertations and project work. Many of these topics can be adapted to suit the needs, interests and skills of both undergraduate and Masters students. Masters students thinking about the possibility of further study will also find ideas for PhD topics here.

This website was developed by the School of Historical Studies, but many of the topics offered here will also interest students from the Schools of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Arts and Cultures, and Geography, Politics and Sociology
