Mr Reuben Sulu

I’m interested in tropical algae, corals and fishes and the human use and impacts on these groups of organisms. My current research focuses on the reef fin-fish fisheries of Central Solomon Islands. I’m examining the different roles played by the different stakeholders and their contributions to the changes in reef fin-fish fisheries and coral reef ecosystem. This includes social and ecological surveys. Reuben Sulu

Current Research

Exploitation and management of reef finfish fisheries in Nggela, Solomon Islands

Project Summary:

My PhD research is on ‘the exploitation and management of coral reef finfish fisheries in Nggela, Solomon Islands’. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, I’m investigating the: socio-economic drivers of fishing; exploitation patterns and perceptions on changes in the fisheries; and the efficacy of customary marine tenure to manage the fisheries. In addition, using histological methods, I’m also investigating in detail the demography of two selected target species (Plectropomus leopardus and Variola albimarginata) within the fisheries. My previous research was on the ecology and aquaculture of tropical seaweeds.
