Impacts of Coral Loss on Reef Ecosystems

Our leading research in this area has involving in particular assessing ecological impacts of the 1998 coral bleaching event in the Western Indian Ocean. This has included before-after comparisons, and meta and long-term data analysis of many WIO sites but most especially the granitic Seychelles. Our work has also included studies of the interaction between bleaching and fishing-related effects in Fiji and long-term changes on the Great Barrier Reef. We will build on our understanding of reef fish/habitat relationships within the large EU FP7 funded FORCE consortium which is to focus on the Caribbean.
