Turner Prize nominated artist James Richards often collages appropriated footage from various sources to make films. Layering different fragments to produce experimental video, Richards foregrounds the tactile, affective dimensions of the image. A core interest in identity and representation intersects with concerns surrounding the body and desire.

Richards often works with collaborators, mapping patterns of influence between his own work and others. In his 2017 collaboration with Steve Reinke 'What Weakens the Flesh is the Flesh Itself'. Interested in how images might work to "elicit, fulfil or negate some desire", the two artists combined various media clips into so as to produce "ambiguous, often visceral sensations rather than knowledge".

Whilst in Newcastle, Richards will also present a programme of films by friends and peers which circles and expands upon his own work at the Tyneside Cinema on Wednesday 23 October 2019. More info and tickets.
