Professor Ferranti S L Wong BDS MSc PhD FDS RCS(Ed) FDS RCS(Eng), FHEA. Ferranti is a Professor/Honorary Consultant of Paediatric Dentistry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London.   He qualified from the University of Dundee in 1982.  After 4 years working in the Community Dental Services in Clacton/Dovercourt, he pursued his career as an MSc student in the then London Hospital Medical College in 1986.  Afterwards, he continued his training in the same institution as a Registrar and then a Clinical Lecturer/Hon Senior Registrar, and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant after completion of his training and obtained a PhD degree in 1996.  He was awarded a personal chair as Professor of Paediatric Dentistry in 2010 in recognition of his research. His main interest is in three dimensional measurements of dental hard tissues using novel X-ray micro tomography techniques. This technique allows him to follow caries development and removal non-destructively. His current research programmes include investigation of efficacy of different caries removal technique and prevention of erosion using a novel synthetic peptide (STN21). His other interest is development of new bioactive material for endodontic obturation and management of dental trauma.  Apart from his research experience on cariology, Ferranti is well situated in a district for clinical trial for caries research because Tower Hamlet, where his hospital is located, is one of the most deprived disticts in UK and the highest caries prevalences. Ferranti’s role for this trial is to identify dental practices that have an interest in treating children and research for patient's benefit. He is responsible for teaching the practitioners the current concepts of managing dental caries as mentioned in the three arms of our methodology, for visiting practices and calibrating our measurements with the practitioners, as well as overall supervision of data collection.
