The icebreaker Ermak (or Yermak) was built for the Imperial Russian Navy by the Armstrong Whitworth Company (later Vickers Armstrongs Ltd) at the Walker shipyard on the Tyne. The ship was launched in 1898 and is considered to be the world's first purpose-built polar icebreaker.
