Corrosion Research Group
University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Background
The group is involved with the investigation of environment sensitive fracture of alloys, electrochemistry and the determining the mechanisms of corrosion. The research and consultancy activities are particularly concerned with the role of environment in promoting stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and corrosion fatigue, the electrochemical aspects of environment assisted cracking (EAC) and life-time prediction for components and structures. The project areas are of relevance to power generating plant, chemical plant and the oil industry.

Internationally known researchers such as Professors Redvers Parkins, Ron Armstrong, Don Hardie and Dr John Congleton have played a major role in developing the facilities and the group now includes staff from several Schools in the Science, Agriculture and Engineering Faculty. Slow strain rate and low frequency fatigue machines are available along with refreshed autoclave loops and equipment for electrochemistry, electron microscopy, elemental analysis and metallography.
