About CIAS

Established in 2015 as Research Group within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS), the Cluster for Interdisciplinary Artefact Studies engages in multi- and cross-disciplinary material culture research in HASS and the wider university. Our aim is to:

  • Foster debate and interaction across disciplinary boundaries
  • Support our members in the organisation of research events and the drafting of funding bids and publications
  • Act as a catalyst for strategic partnerships with third parties including, amongst others, Northumbria University, Durham University, University of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, and the National Glass Centre
  • Provide funding and support for research students and early career researchers
  • Create opportunities for the specialist training of researchers and doctoral students
  • Provide a platform for developing impact and engagement activities
  • Offer expert consultancy in artefact identification, characterization, and analysis for museums, universities, heritage agencies, and the commercial sector
  • And develop advanced teaching and research resources
