Bio-Imaging Outreach Event at Centre for Life

The Newcastle University Bio-Imaging unit ran a week long public engagement event at the International Centre for Life, from Saturday 30th July – Friday 5th August.

The “Meet the Scientist” space was transformed into a mini-microscopy lab to spark visitor interest in microscopy and bio-imaging and provide an insight into the research taking place within Newcastle University. Each day there was a theme, with Cell Division Biology taking the (microscope) stage on Thursday 4th August!

The display included research grade microscopes from Nikon, allowing visitors to take a look at the microscopic world and observe live experiments like never before. There were be hands-on activities throughout, from preparing slides and transforming your smartphone into a microscope, to probing the inner world of the cell. A daily DIY microscope workshop gave visitors the chance to build their own microscope out of household items, and a kids' station saw children learning about cell structures such as the mitotic spindle by building them out of air dough.

Thanks to Jonny McHugh, Diana Papini and Mahdi Lamb from CDB for helping out, and to Ashleigh Herriott, Alex Laude, Glyn Nelson and Rolando Berlinguer-Palmini from the Bio-Imaging Unit for all their efforts.
