Research by Design

‌This theme reflects the emergence of creative design practice as a research methodology. The theme is is closely linked with the PhD by Creative Practice route that was first established in APL in 2010. It brings together research collaborations between staff, and staff and doctoral students, whose output is primarily design-based. This includes the research-led design of Design Office, led by Adam Sharr, which has recently researched British university buildings of the 60s and 70s and has produced a number of realized projects for the Newcastle University campus and the critical research and design of Stasus, led by James A Craig and Matt Ozga-Lawn, whose project for Warsaw, Animate Landscapes, was published as Pamphlet Architecture 32. There is a strong emphasis on self-build as a mode of research in the work of Graham Farmer (for example in the U-TEC Café, 2013 and at Stonehaugh Star Gazing Pavilion, in progress at Kielder) and of Daniel Mallo and Armelle Tardiveau.
