Therapy for people with aphasia
A woman with aphasia working with a speech and language therapist.
We run individual and group therapy sessions for people with aphasia, working with people to improve their communication. Therapy is with either qualified speech and language therapists or with students under supervision. We work with groups of 8-10 people over an 11-12 week period. People attend across 3 days. The intensity of therapy offered at the Centre is unique in the area. Individual therapy is tailor-made to their needs and group therapy allows communication practice within a supportive environment.
The Centre aims, for each person with aphasia:
- To enable successful communication in everyday life
- To allow communication practice with different people
- To gain support from and learn from each other
- To help people achieve a greater sense of independence
- To ensure therapy goals are linked to the person’s real life needs
As a result of our work with people with aphasia we have developed a set of therapy resources which are now available.
Referrals to the Aphasia Centre are made from speech and language therapists. Therapists can contact the Centre for more information.
